Summer Publishing Sensation -
in a rural French backwater!
Some things are too good too miss! And this is no exception.
Drink, debauchery and mischief. Yes, a heady mix for the young, but an even more dangerous cocktail for the hundreds of thousands of older Brits who’ve chosen to make a foreign country their retreat . . . on a permanent basis.
In this first of a series of revelations, Jonathan Veale portrays the lives of, we suspect, his mates and acquaintances with a friendly eye and, thank goodness, keeps his own ego and nose out of the equation. As a birdwatcher studies the habitat of the common sparrow, Jonathan observes the nesting habits of a group of characters who get up to all sorts of mischief. This is a book that should be kept away from mothers-in-law; if they get hold of it, the secrets of an ‘away from it all life’ will be exposed and the consequences long-lasting.
What’s life really like as an expat? This book reveals all, and teases, amuses and informs with the lightest of touches. A gem to be dipped into at will.
* Expats in France - as you've never seen them before
* A cocoa-spiller to shock the under twenty-ones
* A book destined to knock bestselling 'celebrities' off their stage
* For lovers of France, and storytelling at its best

How welcome to find a book that makes one laugh so much. This is a
most entertaining series of intrigues undertaken by members of a local
expat community here in France. The characters are quite believable
and instantly recognisable as if in our own village. There is a sharp
wit that is found throughout each story and a lovely twist by the
end. This is not just a run-of-the-mill expat book but a real gem.
An ideal Xmas present for unsuspecting francophile friends. I cannot
wait for the sequel.

This book is a Breath of French air ... I loved it so much I couldn't
put it down. Jonathan Veale's ingeneous romp through the French countryside
is cleavly crafted in a series of e-mails and naration. It is a thoroughly
good read and I can't wait for his next instalment!

What a treat to find some good ex-pat fiction. This collection of
delightfully zany episodes is set in an imaginary commune in southwest
France and centred around the town's most popular bar, where a good
proportion of the clientele are anglophone ex-pats. The tales of what
they get up to are linked by the patron's tireless but apparently
fruitless efforts to improve his English in an email correspondence
with a well-known cartoonist. The characters are all instantly recognizable,
portrayed with affectionate good humour. A thoroughly good read, either
in one go or to dip in at random.
